Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2003 - Rolex Sydney Hobart competitors raising funds for breast cancer research |
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA-(24-12-2003) Two women are setting off in this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Race on a mission, not just to complete the 627 nautical miles passage safely but also to use the event to raise awareness for breast cancer research.
Alison Thompson and Jakki Moores from the Sydney 38 Dodo, which is being skippered by Adrian Dunphy, hope to raise more than $5,000 for a cause that “affects a lot of families”.
“My grandmother died of breast cancer and we all know people who have had scares,” said Thompson today.
Family and friends have already pledged donations via the official site: http://www.nbcf.org.au and the two women hope the general public will support them by sponsoring them per mile with 100% of proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
“The crew will face many challenges, perhaps similar to the challenges women affected by breast cancer need to face: endurance, strength of character and above all the will to survive the journey,” says the NBCF web site.
Next year Alison, who has two Sydney Hobart Races under her belt and Jakki, who has one, plan to put together an all-women entry for the 60th anniversary Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
